| Introduction | How did I become an independent learner? During a 23-year career in the United States Air Force, I held a variety of jobs including weather forecaster, behavioral scientist, satellite communications planner, instructional designer, and more. Whenever the opportunity to learn something new arose, I volunteered. Because of my experience with Air Force training, I realized that with proper education, I could learn to do anything. What’s more, so can anyone else! I have a wide variety of interests, but I’ve discovered that no matter how obscure the topic, I can always find a source for learning about it, on my own, in my own style, at my own pace. This is the beauty of independent learning. The most important thing about learning is that it should bring you joy! Find something you are passionate about learning and have fun with it. I’m currently a graduate student at Northcentral University (www.ncu.edu), pursuing a Master of Education degree in Educational Technology. This is an online program–what else would you expect from a committed independent learner? |
