| Introduction | Yannis Lobaina is an award-winning Cuban-Canadian artist, author, filmmaker, photographer, and arts-based workshop facilitator based in Toronto. Yannis' writing is deeply impacted by her multiethnic identity as a multilingual person, woman of colour, mother and immigrant; recently she has published short stories, poetry and creative non-fiction stories exploring themes of immigration, language, and motherhood. As a photographer, Yannis specializes in minimalist photographic storytelling, capturing ephemeral landscapes, patterns, and pareidolias (faces) in Mother Nature. She firmly believes that the arts can be a powerful tool for social change and peace-making. Since 2016, she has developed bilingual (Spanish-English) community-based art programs for children and families around Toronto. Through her creative pursuits, Yannis explores themes of immigration, diaspora, language, and motherhood, making her work deeply personal and relatable to all. |
