Introduction Who is Lysistrata, you ask? She's the main character in an eponymous play by Aristophanes. It was written at the height of the Peloponnesian War, when mass numbers of Greeks were killing each other, and the Athenians were losing badly to the Spartans. To force the men to make peace, the women of Athens, led by Lysistrata, team up with the other women of Greece, including the Spartans, and vow to withhold sex from the men until they make peace. One of the main monologues by Lysistrata is her plan to bring peace to Greece, using the imagery of processing wool and spinning it.
