Introduction The USU car was originally born out of the idea of renewable fuels. 6 years ago a few individuals from different departments on campus got together and talked about creating fuels from CO2 and sunlight through the use of Algae. After years of research we created our first mL of biodiesel nearly 2 years ago. Earlier this summer we were able to run a diesel engine with emissions and dynamometer measurements to characterize it using our algal biodiesel as well as biodiesel from bacteria and yeast respectively grown using waste carbon sources so as to still not affect food sources. The fuels ran favorably and in some cases better than both petroleum diesel (no. 2) and soybean biodiesel. With the hitting of that major milestone it made us realize we needed to set another major goal, drive a vehicle with our fuels. The world stage was appropriate for this goal and it's right in our own backyard: The Bonneville Salt Flats! We found a class for a small diesel that had an open record and would require minimal fuel. With some hard work and determination with the help of Utah Chassis and Machine in Salt Lake City, Utah the USU Aggie A-salt Streamliner was born!
