Introduction Sara Givins is a Sydney based artist whose practice traverses installation and sculpture. Born in Tokoroa, New Zealand, Givins has lived and worked in Australia for the past ten years. She received a BFA from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand in 2001 and a MFA (Research) from Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney University in 2011. Givins has exhibited widely within New Zealand and Australia in both traditional gallery and non-traditional sites. Givins’ installations are built around the idea of semiotic platforms of form, subjectivity and space. Through the re-examination and re-inscription of language through abstraction, subjective perspective can be enhanced and extended. In the spirit of experimentation, alternative perspectives that offer solutions for an integrated socio-cultural community enhance and extend this meaning. Givins believes the analysis of language through abstraction attempts to offer such an extension. Drawing on artistic legacies from post-painterly abstraction, minimalism, orphism, feminism, pop and conceptual art Givins’ aesthetic is rich and diverse with influence.
