| Introduction | Recently I turned forty and had one of those look-back moments you get at the end of each decade, and this is what I saw, a self sufficient smallholder and freelance writer living in a cottage on Exmoor, with a wife, a Great Dane called Darcy, twenty acres of scruffy but beautiful land and loads of animals.
