Introduction Writer, philosopher, traveler and lover of music. I'm also the mother of a beloved little boy known around here as The Monkey. He's a bright, active little guy who just so happens to also be a stroke survivor. Facts: * 1 out of 4,000 babies from in utero to one month old will have a stroke. The rate drops significantly for older children, but they still can and do have strokes. *20% - 40% of children who have a stroke will die as a result. * The majority of young stroke survivors will live with lifelong side effects, such as hemiparesis/hemiplegia (weakness on one side of the body), speech difficulties, and/or seizures. Each survivor is affected differently. However, there is hope. With the right therapies and medications, young stroke survivors can improve significantly and lead active, productive lives. * The majority of young stroke survivors have average to above average intelligence. * Many people, including medical professionals, are still unaware that children can have strokes. Please help spread the word!
