Introduction I am a first year medical student and spent most of life singing and studying music before I realized that my calling was to medicine. On my 25th Birthday I recieved a phone call from my doctor telling me that my fasting blood glucose was 127 for the second time in a row, but for complicated reasons, she avoided the word diabetes. She brushed it under the rug, and so did I. "If my doctor didn't take it seriously, then why should I," I convinced myself? 18-months later the symptoms couldn't hide themselves anymore--I was thirsty, lethargic, moody and peeing all the time. My A1C was 7.9% and I could no longer live in denial. After numerous tests to rule out Type I, I was officially diagnosed with Type II diabetes in November 2007.
