Introduction	What were we thinking?In December 2009 we packed up the bikes and left snowy Boulder, Colorado with one-way tickets to New Delhi and no more of an agenda than to "explore India." Are we crazy? Ever since a 3 week ride from Kathmandu to Varanasi and Agra in 1988 - a final coda to a year’s cycle-tour through South East Asia - I've been intrigued by the idea of returning to India with my bicycle. Don’t ask me why, though: the road conditions, the heat, the filth and the "people factor" that I had experienced in Bihar and U.P. made it a very daunting prospect. Twenty-something years on, my life has changed, I have a willing co-adventurer, and India has changed too - or has it? Part of the appeal of this trip is to see which of my memories and preconceptions about India and South Asia still hold true, and to get another chance to explore this fascinating subcontinent.
