| Interests | I have been teaching preschool since 2003 in a small church program in Birmingham, Alabama. As a 4K teacher, I began developing Literature-Based Art Curriculum after seeing how much my students learned by connecting the literature to the weekly art projects. We always had a theme to connect the lessons in our classroom, but never using the actual stories to teach the elements of art. As of 2015, I moved on to teach Art to all of the 3K and 4K students. I am still developing this curriculum by continuously finding examples of fine art to show in relation to the book's illustrations. The children learn about the elements of art through the illustrations, then are taught how to apply them to their own art project based on the book we are reading as a teaching tool. The art projects encourage children to re-tell the story to their parents (or to anyone who will listen!) and opens up the discussion of how the project was created. The use of literature to teach art is a fun way to show examples of color, line, shape, texture, value and space. As the lessons increase, the children are eager to point out the elements as we read the story of the day. |
