Introduction Mid-30s fanta-sci author, dancer, textile artist, and Spice Jedi, who loves to spend all day in the kitchen. I live in Seattle, the Emerald City, with my professor husband, our 'tween daughter, my widowed mom, and my uncle, so there's always a kitchen victim around. I'm also writing my first cookbook, and make vintage-inspired aprons and corsets. I try to use local, fresh ingredients, instead of canned, boxed food w/huge carbon footprints. Still, it's hard to resist those strawberries from Mexico in January. Luckily, so much is grown in the Pacific Northwest, and Seattle is crawling w/farmers' markets. My biggest goal here is to instill a healthy relationship with food w/my daughter during these next critical years. From L.A., but have lived all over the world, which is reflected in my cooking. Caribbean, Latin, Eastern European, and Middle Eastern. My husband calls my cooking "jazz," meaning that I have the foundation, know the chords, and can pick it up on the fly. He also named me Spice Jedi. My cooking gift IS my sense of spice. I just know what will bring out the flavor in this or that. I feel it. I am not sure that can be taught. I've always had it, even as a kid.
Interests Feisty redheaded author and dancer, whimsical-but-slightly bitchy around the edges, who loves literature of all types, especially words by Laurie Notaro, Oscar Wilde, Alun Lewis, Martin Amis, Kingsley Amis, Orson Scott Card, Philip Roth, and Greg Bear. I've been writing a fanta-sci serial enjoy for 16 years, so I spend my days writing, cooking, making cocktails, dancing, weaving, clothing design, recycling/re-purposing textiles, and exploring new ways to make lentils exciting to my 11-year-old daughter.
