| Introduction | I’m a senior at the University of Kansas studying English and theatre. My experiences at KU both in research and performance have led me to explore the possibilities of theatre as a form of expression for social and political values, a venue for debate and discussion, and a means to shape public opinion and implement change. Combining elements of Brechtian epic theatre, interactive theatre, and devising techniques, I’m exploring the ways that theatre can be more than an aesthetic event, but an educational, critical, and powerful form of activism. My first issue: Aging. Everybody does it, and so far no one has designed a perfect roadmap. We don’t want to think about getting old, so we end up with a highly ageist and divided society and people who aren’t prepared to age successfully. My goal is confront the issue head-on, casting young actors as their older selves so that a young audience can see themselves sixty years in the future and understand that it’s normal, okay, and (can you believe it) wonderful. Aging shouldn’t be scary; it’s a gift. This blog is an account of my adventure in putting together this gargantuan project, from early research to strike of final performance. |
