| Introduction | FONOTO is a collection of black-and-white phone photos by photographer and writer Mike Irwin. The images, mostly of everyday objects and situations, have been captured and processed in a smartphone using off-the-shelf apps to tweak brightness, contrast, cropping and little else. Irwin is drawn to phone photography by its simplicity and self-contained processing. His aversion to gear-heavy activities — such as robotics, mountain climbing and, yes, photography — makes the smartphone an obvious camera choice as he explores back alleys and two-track roads in and around Wenatchee, Washington. |
