| Introduction | Wa-Bam!! It hit me like a lightning bolt! Into a world where there was only one type of school offered–a steady stream of sitting in rows, listening to lectures, and taking tests, along came Malcolm Gladwell’s with his TED Talk “Choice Happiness and Spaghetti Sauce.” He noted that Americans’ different tastes meant there was not one perfect Pepsi, but there were only perfect Pepsis, providing me with the realization that there is no one perfect way of doing school! Clearly, it needed to get fuzzier. There had to be more student choice!! I had always had this vague feeling that there had to be a better way to do school, but it always seemed to exist in a fog just out of my reach. Now it came to rest in my hand in the form of a cold beverage. Since 2009 I have read education, business, entrepreneurial, and leadership books, articles, blog posts and listened to podcasts in preparation to co-found The Arete Project Based Learning Academy at Neenah High School and teach English for the last eight years. We teach English, math, science and social studies to answer a central question or to solve a problem and create a product to exhibit to a public audience outside of our classroom. |
