Introduction We plan to hypothetically examine the genesis and growth of the conflict in Darfur, Sudan, through a joint eleventh grade English/history humanities unit. After two weeks of background and historical scaffolding, we will delve into a three-week unit covering various perspectives of the Sudanese genocide, comparing insider and outsider perspectives over time, with particular focus on the experiences of the "Lost Boys." We will supplement several Sudanese novels with shorter memoir, fictitious, and poetic excerpts as well as film clips, video shorts, and artistic and musical endeavors. This curriculum will take a multicultural education social action approach, culminating with a letter-writing campaign, student-made educational posters, and a class-wide effort to solicit help for those in Sudan.
