A bog is a type of wetland that contains acidic peat (peat is just dead plant material) whereas a fen, a wetland characterized by water chemistry, is neutral or basic and contains a considerable amount of various dissolved minerals, unrelated to compacted plant material. Whew, now that we have that distinction out of the way...


Cowles Bog? Who says it's Cowles's Bog? Henry Chandler Cowles was a botanist who obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He led quite a few field study trips in the area that is now known as Cowles Bog. Many ecological discoveries in the Northwest Indiana region can be attributed to Henry Cowles. The man was legitimate.
