Introduction Dana Johnson was raised in south and central Texas and comes from "families of ranchers, teachers, artists, churchgoers and misfits." She took drawing classes while attending Steven F. Austin State University and has taken watercolor and oil painting classes over the years. However, she is essentially self-taught. After trying different media, oil still remains a favorite of Johnson's. She paints on site when possible, but also from thumbnail sketches and photographs. Sometimes Johnson creates a painting from one or more of these fit together. After attending plein air workshops Dana was further inspired to paint on location to capture the feel of the moment. She says it allows her a truer sense of value, texture and distance. The artist's goal is to capture scenes that are full of light and mood to elicit an emotional response.
