IntroductionHomegrown Locals evolved from a passion for the outdoors, and a devotion to education. I started kayaking in the summer of 2003. Similar to many choices I make in life, I saw a kayak outside a store, went inside, asked how much, and walked out with a life vest, paddle, and boat. It was instantly addicting, and I am still obsessed. The sport offers something unique, a union between person, boat, and water, an elemental relationship that delivers one on an otherworldy adventure while moving atop a fluid medium. Just like life, ultimately it is all about the journey. At the end of the day it is the stories we crave. As humans we realize our stories as evidence of our lives here on earth. Ultimately those stories are all we have. A kayaker understands the value of friendships forged, stories told, and the importance of living life with flow. My commitment to kayaking led to a strong desire to share the inspiration I received from the water with other people. Around the same time, I began a teaching career in environmental education. The two worlds were a natural fit and Homegrown was born.
