Introduction I first went to Mexico when I was 11, living with a Mexican family for two weeks in the capital. Except for the dad, who was at work most of the time, the family spoke almost no English, so I learned quickly. Plus I ate my first tacos al carbon, danced for the first time, and enjoyed such delights as the floating gardens of Xochimilco. I've returned many times, including a month in Guadalajara in 1977 where I studied full time and emerged with near-perfect command of Spanish grammar. My skills have generally gone downhill, but every time I visit a Spanish-speaking country, I quickly start becoming more fluent. That's why I chose to spend several months here in Mazatlan -- that and the fact that it's a wonderful place, that I can do my journalism and consulting work from here, and that my beloved wife supported me wholeheartedly in this mid-life adventure.
