| Introduction | As a student, I tolerated math and struggled at times, especially with "word problems". Therefore, I am very familiar the feelings of fear and frustration that come from not understanding what a problem is asking and not knowing how to start solving it. Ironically, I am now a fourth grade math (and science) teacher who has become passionate about helping my students understand how numbers work and equipping them with strategies to use math to successfully solve everyday, real life problems. If I teach math, why do I blog? The non-stop demands of teaching can easily make me lose focus that I am working with talented, precious young humans. To be a part of my students' learning process (especially when they persevere through a challenge) and help them learn how to think is a privilege. I can't read minds, but I can understand and influence thinking! Posting my students' progress helps me remember this. In addition, math is taught much differently now, and I want to be able to enable parents to help their students when there isn't a textbook explanation to send home. |
| Interests | I enjoy being active, outdoors, cooking, taking pictures, creating things, and most of all spending time with my amazingly loving and forgiving ("It's almost 6:00...where are you?" "Another Amazon.com box?" "You spent how much on a pencil sharpener?!" :-) ) husband and adorable dog. |
