| Introduction | I loved making up stories when I was little... then at the age of 16 I decided I wanted to “be a writer,” and things rapidly went downhill from there. After producing a lot of angsty and embarrassing gothic poetry (now mostly destroyed for the benefit of posterity), I turned to novels. Unlike many writers, who have lots of abandoned great novels under their beds, I have lots of abandoned rubbish first chapters. In 2004 I decided I was going to finish a book no matter what, so I went back to an earlier attempt and developed it into “Kill-Grief,” a historical novel set in a 1750s hospital. It was published in April 2009. I'm now writing a second novel, provisionally titled “For the Love of Freaks,” about a small-time sideshow exhibitor in Victorian Liverpool.
