IntroductionI'm a writer, educator, communications consultant/coach and advocate for change. I teach communications at the University of Waterloo and the Stratford Chefs School. From 2000 to 2010, I served as a trustee with the Avon Maitland District School Board. I've advocated for every child's right to learn in my region of Ontario. I believe in equity in education as part of a larger belief in fairness. My first novel, Goddess Fire, was published in 2009. It is a fantasy novel about the impact of a repressive regime on both the oppressors and the oppressed. My short story Do Unto Others, set far in the future, explores what could happen if climate change ravages the world and certain religious groups see this as God's will. I'll continue to write fiction, but now I want to explore ways to bring about social and political change, to make the world a fairer place, where children everywhere have food and education, where people have the right to make personal choices without fear of reprisal. Some would say in North America, we have a great deal of freedom; I'd say that is not always the case. In other parts of the world, Africa in particular, freedom is often little more than a dream.
