IntroductionI am a NYC public school teacher. Several years ago I was "excessed" from my original school due to staff downsizing. For three years, I was in exile, serving as a resident substitute in several different schools. I recently found a "real" position, which I started in September. I will continue to support my excessed colleagues. Once an ATR teacher always an ATR teacher.
InterestsATR stands for the Absent Teacher Reserve. This is a pool of over 1,000 NYC public school teachers who have been excessed--i.e., they have been transferred out of their original schools not due to their performance (which in most cases was satisfactory or better) but due to issues of staffing and enrollment. They are temporarily placed by the NYC Department of Education in another school, usually for a period of one year, where they continue to teach, usually as "resident" substitutes within their new school.
