Introduction Reasons for My Music Diary: 1. Listening to music can be a joy. 2. Listening can be an active or a passive experience. In my ongoing efforts to, "be in this moment" I've decided to write about the music I'm listening to, so I can make sure I'm really, "paying attention" as I listen. 3. I worked with a piano teacher who kept a blog of the various music he listened to. I thought he was quite nifty for diligently writing down what sound waves vibrated in his ear drums. 4. I met a theatre graduate who told me he is too embittered by the theatre scene (likely understandably so) to attend plays. His comment really resonated with me. Over the years my own bitterness about the music scene in Canada (again, likely understandably so) had grown to the point that I could barely listen to other indie artists' music. It was time to at least try to change that, because, as noted above, listening to music can be a joy.
Interests 5. Few people ever acknowledge their, "issues." And what do ya' know, those issues don't get resolved, but rather, grow. My own musical inferiority complex has been a pain in the ass to myself, as well as others. I don't have to blame myself. I've been treated badly, rejected, and left out by a lot of musicians over the years. Still, I don't have to stay stuck in negativity either. There's no sense being jealous about what other people have been able to do musically. It's too heavy, and hard. It's a form of self abuse, I've realized. Better to give people a fair chance, even if I know I haven't always been given a fair chance myself. It's character building. 6. To apply the Butterfly Effect to building musical community. If positivity, musical collaborating, friendliness etc can occur between myself and any of the music makers I write about, or any other person for that matter, can come to be from anything I write, that would wonderful. 7. I'd like to hope that music is an expression of people's connection with the abyss, the beyond, heaven etc. Its our own unique expression of God, if you will. I'm not an idiot. I know there are a lot of fakes, posers, megalomaniacs and soulless jerks making music for fame, money and all the perks that go with it. I've met many of them personnally. Still, when possible, I'd like to find and hear music that makes me feel like I'm closer to the beyond / heaven because of the unique portal someone's music has opened up. Ofcourse the only way I'm going to hear, is if I listen.
Favorite Movies What Else: 1. I'm going to try to write something positive about each record I listen to. Still, I'm not going to pretend I don't have, "analysis skills" by proceeding to say that everything on the records I write about is terrific. I'm just not going to mention anything constructive or that I didn't like about the records. For that reason, these aren't, "real reviews." These writings are just my diary entries. As such, I'd ask artists not to quote me in their press packs or promotional materials. 2. I'd like to think artists or bands would be pleased that I wrote about their records, out of the hundreds of records released each week, that I could have written about instead. 3. There's some music I just won't write about. From my personal experience, the people involved are just too wretched. Even the White Witch of the Bay of Fundy (I guess that's basically who I am) has her limits in terms of my patience for fakery. 4. These are snapshots of a bit of what I heard, rather than comprehensive write ups. My time is limited. Again, they are not intended to be reviews. 5. People who want to send me a CD can do so, and I may listen to it, and I may write about it. 5. This music diary is an experiment. I could update or change the format, or discontinue it at anytime. As long as it leads to positivity, and time permits, I currently plan to continue. 6. There's a lot of hipster music bloggers, trend setters, and cultural leaches out there. My music diary has nothing to do with them. My music diary is about listening, positivity, addressing my own "issues", and being open to musical community. 7. My music can be heard at mackenziemacbride.com and purchased at iTunes by searching, "Mackenzie MacBride." To say the least, I always appreciate any support or kind word that comes my way.
