About me

Introduction I'm UB Distinguished Professor of History at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. I've written five books, mostly dealing with French social and cultural history; the most recent are The European Nobility, 1400 –1800 (Cambridge University Press, 1996) and Lost Worlds: The Emergence of French Social History, 1815–1970 (Penn State University Press, 2006). I also edited Europe, 1450–1789: Encyclopedia of the Early Modern World, 6 vols. (Charles Scribner’s Sons, 2004). Right now I'm completing a book on the early-seventeenth-century French duke Henri de Rohan and the circle around him. (For a complete list of publications and some recent papers, see my entry at academia.edu.) This blog is meant to accompany my course on early modern Europe at the University at Buffalo.
