Introduction | Community, artist, other arts, lectures, studio and collaborative exhibits. Curator plus social media producer. As an artist? I have bending wire for almost 25 years. See more images at: Asia Wire Art on Facebook or visit my website at www.asiawireart.com. See resume on this site. |
Interests | I was inspired to be an artist by my grandfather who was a sculptor of regional fame – his having been included in the World’s Fair of 1939. In addition, my immediate family housed some of the works associated with the art collection of my great aunts, Claribel and Etta Cone. Some of these works included paintings of Villon, Mattisse, Talouse-Lautrec, and Picasso. These paintings influenced me greatly, defining for me an early desire to create visionary and artistic representations of my own life experience. My sculpture has been referred to as looking much like a wire drawing. My primary drive with my work is now towards an understanding of the complexity of the human experience with a further hope that somehow with a simple line I may communicate the fluidity of all of our experiences. I mean to say that because we are all inter-related there are aspects of all of our experiences that have a common thread, that of our shared humanness. This shared thread is what I can feel hopeful about in that perhaps a feeling of compassion can arise for one another when we understand we are not that different from one another. These sculpture pieces therefore invite the viewer to see our lives with a bit of humor and compassionate, thoughtful understanding. My work is thus abstract, fluid, and whimsical; quite often reflecting poetic interpretations of animals and of indigenous figures which are representative of iconic cultural mythologies as well as variable emotional states of being. I have worked diligently, creating hundreds of original artworks which have evolved over the course of many years. I now create sculpture with both simple baling wire and steel or stainless steel replicas of wire images. In 2001 accepted into the “Top 110 Poetry Bunker”Venice Biennale. Selection: 1 of 32 sculptors in the state for OVAC’s “VisionMakers”. Represented by: M.A. Doran Gallery in Tulsa, OK; Simply Oklahoma in Guthrie, OK; Pickard Art Gallery in Oklahoma City |
