| Introduction | I have been an avid writer and poet since I was about 12 when a poem I scribbled for a last minute assignment did well in the writing fair. I thought that was the beginning, but looking back it all started a couple years before when I began writing reports for school. I "hated writing," yet once I got started I had a hard time stopping. I loved to twist the rules of my assignments to write reports I actually enjoyed reading. It was not the writing I hated, but the editing and handwriting each draft. Ah, technology. Having experienced a challenging childhood, I used writing to have a voice when I felt otherwise silenced sweeping the family skeletons under the family rug. We grew up poor to an alcoholic father, drug addict mom and a step dad that raped me. I have insisted on having a voice not only for me, but for other victims of circumstance and made that declaration in my youth as if it were a choice. Throughout the last 20 years it has been an obsession. I've spent over two decades scribbling on napkins and receipts, keeping journals, poetry and now blogging since 2006. I have also spent the last 17 years raising a family, establishing a career and dabbling in my passion. |
