Introduction I am a former teacher, a student of religious history and thought. In mid-life, when my younger daughter entered college, I quit my job teaching high school English and drove down from Seattle to Berkeley, California to begin the formal study of theology. The school was the Graduate Theological Union, and I eventually completed the M.A.program in Philosophical Theology and the Ph.D. in Theology & the Arts. Since then I have been working on this book: interviewing family, reading Mennonite and other history, doing genealogical research at the Centers for Mennonite Brethren Studies in Hillsboro, Kansas and Fresno, California. I have also been learning how to do this kind of writing. It has taken a very long time, but I have now exceeded the 10,000 hours I’ve heard is necessary for the mastery of a new skill. Words flow quite readily, and sitting down to write each day is almost automatic. I can actually see the near completion of this long contemplated work, and have a good start on the book that is to follow. This “blog” is the next phase of the project, the task of getting my work out into the world beyond family and friends.
