| Introduction | After a childhood spent declaring that I was going to be "an author" when I grew up, I got sidetracked into IT for 15 years. A research masters exploring roles and relationships between small business owners and web consultants didn't lead me anywhere I wanted to be, but did remind me how much I loved writing. So I enrolled in a creative writing PhD and did a book manuscript of narrative non-fiction stories about people's experiences of caring for a terminally-ill family member - 'A Hospital Bed at Home' - plus a dissertation justifying my collaborative methods as an ethical form of life writing. In June 2009, I started working as a part-time journalist with The Armidale Express, writing news stories for the paper and features for its magazine. After finishing my PhD, I combined my journalism work with casual and contract academic work before taking a full-time position as Senior Journalist at the Express in 2012. |
