About me

LocationUpperville, VA, United States
IntroductionI have drawn as long as I can remember, and started painting in college while pursuing a B.A. in Graphic Design with a minor in Philosophy. I studied Graphic Design with Michael Graham and Marjorie Hirano, learning typography, illustration and layout just before computers entered the scene. (I have since learned computer graphics, but I'm grateful to have learned on the cusp.) After my first painting courses, my teachers (Robert D’Arista and Ben Summerford) encouraged me to continue my studies toward an MFA in painting. I also studied with Stephen Pace in New York and Maine, and Patricia Friend and Bill Calfee, in Maryland. These friends/mentors were very encouraging. They all stressed the importance of having a foundation in drawing and composition, or, as Bill Calfee put it, the “scaffolding.” None of them ever suggested I follow in their footsteps or emulate their styles, but rather to be true to my own vision. In 2008, I moved with my family to a farm in the Virginia Piedmont at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where I continue to paint and draw.
