| Introduction | Becoming a victim of workplace violence changed my life dramatically. After being attacked while working as a nurse, I attempted to pursue criminal charges against my assailant and was told by the responding police officers that my assailant would not be arrested because I had not sustained serious bodily injuries. After that, I was ready to quit my job and leave the nursing profession behind. Instead, I decided to fight back and work to create change. Along with many others, I will continue to fight for increasing criminal penalties for assaulting a health care provider and creating safer work places that deter violence. In my spare time, I'm also a doctoral student at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing. My research focus is workplace violence in the emergency department and how emergency department nurses perceive and cope with experiences of workplace violence. |
