| Introduction | The landscapes and culture of the American West, from the Oregon coast to Montana's prairies, are my inspiration. I like to work in a graphic style; and I am attracted to contrast and clean lines. My palette emphasizes jewel tones such as those favored by the Scandinavian Saami people, who are ancestors of mine. When I was a toddler my mother spotted my love of drawing and often sat me down to watch learn-to-draw television programs. I also benefited from the lessons of my stepfather, Joe Daly, and my mother's brother, Don Lee. Joe used my crayons to show me how to blend colors. Through Don I was exposed to the lessons of renowned Montana artist Ace Powell, who had been Don's teacher. In May 2009 I underwent emergency surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. I now have memory and multitasking problems. The surgery also caused a stroke on my right side. I now need to use a cane part of the time. But my challenges presented me with an opportunity when I realized that the art lessons of my youth had stuck. I am now pursuing the art career I dreamed of as a teenager. After a long hiatus, I have re-immersed myself in making art and am thoroughly enjoying it. |
