| Introduction | My family has a long and honorable history of freedom fighting. My father’s kin were Diggers; my grandfather was killed by mercenaries when the Diggers defeated in 1650. My father, only an infant, escaped to Deal, and grew up as a waterman. My mother was Irish, descended from the “pirate queen” Grace O’Malley. Her family was displaced by Cromwell’s rape of Ireland, and in one of the last of Clan O’Malley’s boats, escaped to England. I went to sea as a child with my father, working on fishing boats and “free traders” – the famous “Deal luggers” – becoming owner and skipper of the fastest lugger on the Channel. Running home one night with a load of wine, I was sold out by my French connection and captured by the Royal Navy, who pressed me and my crew into HM Sloop Dogfish and stole my boat and cargo. We were ordered to the Caribbean to fight the Spanish, and to protect the slave trade to the British colonies. I “fell” overboard from the topsail yard on the Bahama Bank and swam to Dead Man’s Cay. Making my way to Nassau to find work, I met Ben Hornigold, who had just retired and taken a pardon. He sent me to Charles Vane, who signed me on as Sailing Master. |

If you could peer far enough into the night sky, you'd see a star in any direction you looked. When would you sleep?
In the daytime, duh... preferably while off watch. An experienced sailor can sleep anytime under any conditions.
