| Introduction | I'm a Classically trained artist metalworker. My initial training was as a Goldsmith in the European tradition. I served a 5 year apprenticeship and subsequently travelled to Japan to research the Japanese decorative metal working tradition associated with the Japanese Sword. I now work almost exclusively out of my adopted tradition. |

| Favorite Movies | The Scent of Green Papaya, directed by Anh Hung Tran, 1994 I suppose I must admit to at least one mandatory Samurai movie. The one I appreciate most is called "The twilight Samurai" in English, rubbish title in my opinion. It's called "Tasogarei Seibei" in Japanese. The lead role is played by Hiroyuki Sanada who is probably better known ( and loved ) for that memorable scene in "The last samurai" where that little American bloke ( I forget his name ) gets the crap beaten out of him in the mud and the rain. In fact these two films represent two utterly different conceptions of the samurai class. They are set about 10 years apart, the Japanese film being ever so slightly earlier in history. The reality, humanity and authenticity of Tasogarei Seibei is also far more compelling, as is the aesthetic if the work. The best bit of "The last samurai" was the lead female role, Koyuki. What an exquisite image she portrayed. Although I cringed at the supposed relationship that develops between her and the little bloke. |
