Introduction I am faculty in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz with a joint appointment as staff astronomer of the University of California Observatories/Lick Observatory. My main research interests over the last 35 years have been to push technology and the largest telescopes in the optical and near-infrared to explore the early assemblage, nature, and transformations of galaxies and supermassive black holes (known generically as Active Galactic Nuclei or AGN) through deep multi-wavelength surveys using spectroscopy and imaging.
