| Introduction | I travelled to Armenia from Jan 12-Feb 10 to do humanitarian work. I spent two weeks in the province of Vayots Dzor in the town of Yeghegnadzor and another two weeks meeting with individuals, NGOs and government representatives in Yerevan, with the goal of developing contacts, creating a network and discussing the feasibility of future cooperation and assistance from Canada. I organised a fundraising campaign, distributing nearly $20,000 through the Atken Armenian Foundation, an organization with roots in the area devoted to music education, economic aid and humanitarian work. The money was distributed to those most in need in the province of Vayots Dzor, and especially those in need of emergency assistance, such as the families of deceased and injured soldiers and war refugees from Artsakh, and also to buy seed for established agricultural projects in the region. I worked in close contact and with valuable input from Syunik Development NGO, a 25 year-old organization that does incredible work there. I was until recently Director of Parliamentary Affairs in the Senate of Canada. I am the author of the book "The Call from Armenia: Canada's Response to the Armenian Genocide" (2015) |
