Introduction Ritmo en los Barrios is a project dedicated to providing to providing music instruction to children of lower-income families with the belief that this will make them happier and healthier individuals. It has grown steadly since its inception in 2003. Currently, Nicaraguan teachers and international volunteers teach over 700 children to sing, play the piano, the guitar, the recorder and the violin in twelve schools located in slums and poor rural areas. Besides playing in class, these children have performed in school concerts, in restaurants and in the street. They have also played for local radio stations and television and recordered a CD. Rhythm in the Barrios organizes workshops for teachers and musical performances for children.
