| Introduction | I am a missionary doubling as an English conversation teacher. Honestly though, I feel like the relationships are really why I am here. I have been realizing more and more recently what a blessing it is for me to be an American. In Japanese culture, people are divided into social classes- based on many aspects of life such as age, job, etc.- which totally changes peoples' relationships with one another. Even the language is grammatically based on these divisions. However, since I am not actually a part of their culture, people let me into their lives where they aren't supposed to let others. I am a farmer: sometimes I get the weeds out of people's lives; sometimes I see the chutes breaking through the soil for the first time, but those moments don't come as often as I would like; mostly I plant seeds. (For a nice Biblical allusion, see Matthew 13, the parable of the sower.) There are days when I feel like my time is wasted, when I can see nothing of what I am doing. God keeps me grounded. He reminds me that HE decides which seeds to water, HE decides the best time for harvest. |
