| Introduction | I’m a recovering computer professional--and a middle school teacher before that. When I left the field for the most part, in 2004, I attended culinary school part-time, taking the first step toward a food-related career. *** In the years since culinary school, our awareness of what's been happening in our food system has increased. While I’ve railed against margarine and its ilk since college (just ask my mom), real food has become even more important to me in the last decade or two, and so my focus has shifted away from the gourmet to the desire to teach about real food and the making thereof, so that the term "from scratch" doesn’t slip out of our culture. *** My family's roots in farming gave me a chance to spend a lot of time with my uncle, an 80-something farmer in Virginia. Watching his connection to the soil, to the seasons, and to the animals has convinced me that his easy-going kindness and humility are the result of 80-plus years of being "rooted in the land." *** I am hoping that this blog will chronicle my journey down that same road. |
