Introduction	NPI-Africa was founded in 1984 at a time when many countries in Africa were engulfed in internal conflicts and there was a lack of focused initiatives and capacity to respond to those conflicts. Its initial focus was the stimulation of discussion and action on how peace could become a major agenda item for institutions in Africa. It subsequently moved towards direct engagement with conflicts and peacebuilding processes in Africa through mediation, reconciliation, training and strategy development in Kenya, Ghana, Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Congo (DRC) and Uganda, among others. Its training work has reached an even greater number of countries. Its work has enabled NPI-Africa to develop relationships with a broad network of organizations, processes and individuals across the continent and the rest of the world. NPI-Africa is currently the Regional Coordinator for Eastern and Central Africa in the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict, a global network of civil society organizations working towards the prevention of conflict
