| Introduction | Google lists over 2 million "Jeffrey Barbers," none of whom I have met. This version lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, not far from the house where Rachel Carson wrote "Silent Spring." Like many others, I care about what happens to the world. I care about my friends and family. I do what I can to improve things. I make lots of mistakes, some of them extremely dumb. I try to learn from these, and in some cases I am successful. I was born in Oakland, California in 1950, when the ferries still took commuters across the Bay to San Francisco. I entered this world precisely 50 years before my daughter (give or take a few hours). I am not so different from most people, with various defining quirks. Having dealt with several deaths in recent years, my young daughter and I have had many rather complex discussions about mortality, God and nature. Hopefully we all leave behind something helpful and something beautiful. |
