Introduction	First and foremost, I am a pragmatist, but I believe in the natural rights of Life, Liberty and Property, and I am an admirer of the Enlightenment values of Toleration, Science and Scepticism. While I am not a member of any political party, I do have a regard for the 18th century Whig party, and for Edmund Burke in particular; I am therefore more inclined to agree with conservative opinions. Although I have no right to claim to be a significant intellectual, I do have a brother who is a Professor of Philosophy at a Russell Group University, with whom I do not necessarily see eye to eye on political issues, hence my interest in why people of goodwill can have varying views. I fear that many of the values of the Enlightenment are becoming threatened from various directions, and especially worryingly by the increasingly illiberal Left.
