| Introduction | Lance S. Barron was raised in Spearsville, Louisiana. Nineteen years in, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. In 1976, he finished his four-year hitch. That June he began the best job of his life: seasonal cave guide at Mammoth Cave National Park. For two summers and a couple of holidays, Lance guided, mostly trailed, visitors through what were then known as the self-guided Historic, the Scenic tour and the Frozen Niagara tours.
