Introduction I’m not a lawyer. I’m not an accountant. I’m not a banker. I’m not a financial adviser. Fundamentally I’m a “line guy”, but with quite varied experience. I’ve run start up charities, I’ve been buried in the back rooms of big institutions, but I had the most fun running my own P&Ls. Initially in a £500k business, then £2m, £10m, £20m, and latterly £50-£130m I’ve run teams of doers, player managers, manager administrators; sales teams, telemarketing teams, software development teams, production and operations teams. I’ve been a “lifer” with big HR departments taking me for granted because I’ve been on their payroll for 12 years. I’ve been the new guy that people were queuing up to stab in the back. I’ve made no profit (on purpose) and made and sustained 50% operating profits year after year when those about me were struggling to make half that. I’ve been a protégé, a mentor, a leader, a loner, and (allegedly) a great coach. I’ve been out of my depth, bored witless, under direct and sustained personal attack for my position, and deemed both a “frightening intellect” and a compete ass (context is everything, apparently).
