Larissa Read
| Interests | My name is Larissa Read and I am a dance artist based in Vancouver B.C. I started dancing at age 4 and grew up in Langley, British Columbia. My exploration of dance started with me asking my mom to be put me in dance. I trained in ballet and contemporary at a small studio, Cameron Academy for Classical Dance, now Cameron Dance Academy and studied mainly under the owner, Deborah Cameron, and her daughter, Kelly Bennis. There I studied in contemporary and RAD ballet and studied up to Advanced 2 completing my Advanced 1 exam. I started studying dance at the university level at SFU in 2015 learning many new techniques. I studied Graham technique with Judith Garay, Cunningham technique with Megan Walker-straight, took class with Rob Kitsos, Henry Daniel, Cheryl Prophet, Emmalena Fredriksson, Sylvain Brochu, Marla Eist, and Delina Law. These teachers had influences in jazz, Bartenieff fundamentals, Laban movement, hip hop, release work, ballet, flying low and many more that have influenced how I move and organize my body in the present. I was somewhat “sheltered” as a young dancer from the history of dance and the differences within techniques. Coming to SFU has opened my eyes to the world of contemporary dance and through the school I have been able to work with and perform works by Josh Beamish, KT Niehoff, Ziyian Kwan, Company 605, Anya Saugstad, Vanessa Goodman, Desiree Dunbar, as well as our teachers Cheryl Prophet, Rob Kitsos, and Judith Garay. |
