| Introduction | I have been a poet since 1968, when I realized I had this 'sickness,' which is nothing more than a keen awareness of language as music. I am a two-time college drop-out, indolent, stubborn and full of insouciant notions and mischief. I live my life as I please, read for pleasure and compose as I am moved to, a simple Christian leaning LDS who serves the muse. I live in downtown Salt Lake City with my dear wife, kids, grandsons, dogs, cats and my beloved books. Drop by and visit. Bread, wine and poetry are plentiful under my roof. |
| Interests | I like to hunt for mushrooms; the activity is yet unlicensed and requires a small spade, sack and a picnic basket. I Love to read to people, especially my grandsons. As a result of that reading I feel I must hail Laura Ingalls Wilder as a great narrative poet for the elegance and economy manifested in her lovely lines. |
| Favorite movies | The Company of Wolves, Cat People, Raising Arizona anything that originates in myth put to celluloid; or else I love old silent movies like Beloved Rogue, Orphans of the Storm, Pandora's Box, Diary of a Lost Girl. I also love movies that love books, like Inkheart, The Ninth Gate, etc. |
| Favorite music | Prokofiev, Janacek, Beethoven, most jazz, especially Toot Thielemans and his collaborators. Have always been drawn to orchestral music and full strings, reeds, winds and brass that can paint with a great variety of hues. Add choral singing to the mix and you have Janacek's Glagolitic mass or Faure's Pavanne--exhilarating stuff! |
| Favorite books | Wise Children, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Wise Blood, The Sound and the Fury, The Muses are Heard, Saints and Strangers, the Bloody Chamber, The Collected Poems of Dylan Thomas, all of Joyce, much of Burgess, Poe and Hawthorne, etc. I eschew political screeds as prescriptive snake oil. |
