Introduction Bonanzai is a design document written by DigiPen instructor Rob Kmiec. It describes the journey of Makoto, a young samurai of feudal Japan, into the land of the unknown and the supernatural. The purpose of this document was to introduce interdisciplinary teaching methods into 3 courses: Character Design, Storyboarding and Animation Projects. Sophomore students, in these classes, were responsible for designing, sculpting and building the characters, creatures, props, vehicles and environments described in the document. Furthermore, we tasked them with the challenge of working within the constraints of a "house style." 3 different artists were chosen based on the overall quality of their work from process to polish. Our primary "house style" reference was artist Nick Carver, as he is actively involved in world-building and making awesome work in general. Secondary, but no less awesome, were artists, Ryan David Jones and Johannes Helgeson. The next phase, currently in production, is the creation of storyboards for a full-color animated short. This short will be completed by the end of this semester.
