| Introduction | I was born on the coldest day, in the coldest month, in the coldest spot, on an island, off the rock-bound coast of Maine (apologies to Slocum). I owned my first boat at age 10. I have been sailing Friendship Sloops since I was 13. I started my professional career in sailing (as crew) that year. In 1976 I started working for Patrick Ellam Inc. doing offshore deliveries between Florida and the BVI's. That season I sailed on 5 trips. For ten years I plied the waters of the western N. Atlantic learning the ways of the ocean and seafarers. I started boatbuilding whilst still in high school and have alternated between boat and house building for most of my career when not on the ocean. |
