Introduction I never showed much interest in gardening when I was younger although my mom enjoyed the hobby. It wasn't until 2001, I had my first house and was faced with standard builder planted shrubs, that I was truly bitten. It began with Don Juan. I carefully researched red climbing roses before choosing him for the lush number of petals and sweet smell. Of course, I couldn't just plop it in the ground, so I also researched how to plant it. The secret to success, I was assured, was the hole; it should be two feet by two feet. It's a family joke that I am terrible at judging size; things used to come in small, medium and large (decided by whether it was shorter than my brother-6 feet-or longer.) Attempting to avoid family ridicule by measuring, I decided to eyeball it. The hole, by the time my parents arrived for Sunday dinner, was four feet by four feet. So much for avoiding ridicule. The rose died although I'm sure the hole had nothing to do with it. Undettered, I ordered a second one which grew into the beautiful, sweet-smelling shrub I was promised. And my parents gave me a present--a collapsable yardstick I faithfully use every time!
