| Introduction | I am the mother of three unique people. I have two sons: one is autistic and lives at home. The other works at a science museum. My daughter, Hannah, was a beautiful young woman whose life ended too soon. She was sexually assaulted at 15 and held the internalized shame of that assault and the disbelief of her peers for the next 8 years, triggering a cascade of depression, anxiety and antisocial behaviour. She took her life two days after she received her college diploma after a heavy argument with a family member. I am trying to learn how to live with the loss, the guilt, the shame: not finding her in time, not protecting her enough, not being in tune to her pain. |
